Medicare guidance

Understanding Medicare starts with the basics.

Most Americans age 65 or older, or people under 65 with a permanent disability for more than two years, may qualify for Medicare. This federal program is divided into four parts: A, B, C, and D. We help you understand how they can work together for your needs.

The four parts of Medicare

01

Part A: Hospital services

Part A generally covers 80% of hospital services. Individuals typically qualify after contributing Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.

02

Part B: Medical services

Part B generally covers 80% of medical services, including primary care and specialist visits. Beneficiaries typically pay a monthly premium deducted from their Social Security benefit.

03

Part D: Prescription drug coverage

Part D is privately administered prescription drug coverage. Plans commonly include a monthly premium, deductible, and medication copayments; delaying enrollment may result in a late-enrollment penalty.

04

Part C: Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans can help address costs not covered by Parts A and B, while offering additional benefits through private insurance carriers.
